264 lb wagon tire swage block anvil – Description

Both the right and left side of this 264 lb wagon tire swage block anvil have long curves with one side guide. During horse and wagon days blacksmiths bent iron flat iron bars into circular wagon tires on this block.  In Pennsylvania blacksmiths had swage blocks similar to this. With this tool they forged the round tires for the early 19th century Conestoga wagons. In Pennsylvania these swage blocksy typically had guides on both sides. In the  center of this block is a special recess  for a specific operation – long forgotten. On the top left is a most unusual swage block depression. In fact it  looks like a small cannon shell bottom swage.  Perhaps this block designed for military factory use.   Call  Josh:   804 861 2788    Cell: 804 721 8100   email us  or contact us on Facebook

Here again we see the 2 side guides added onto the main block. In practice this does not limit the maximum width of the wagon tires. When the block is laid down on the guides there is clearance for punching operations from the top. Unlike the more modern German swage blocks, There are relatively few holes for tool holding or punching.   Call  Josh:   804 861 2788    Cell: 804 721 8100   email us  or contact us on Facebook

Here again we see the most unusual depression. Clearly this is not a cone, but has the perfect shape for a large bullet or small cannon shell.  At this time I can’t think of any other common use for such a shape.
